SYRACUSE: The Goot learns how to salsa.
No chips, just a lot of ass shaking and trying to find the beat.  (Anyone seen the beat?)  On Thursday night a crew of us went up to Metro on Westcott Street for some sushi I wish they’d step their sushi game up, it left some to be desired) and to learn how to dance the salsa (muy bien).  Between learning a thing or two from Yu-Lee and the older lady with plenty of blue eye makeup...

EVENT: Jan 31: 13th Annual Brewfest
Saturday, January 3113th Annual CNY Brewfest I love beer. It’s true.  In college I used to work at a beer superstore called HalfTime.  Senior year of college was great in large part to the house and crew I lived with, and the education I received from the beer store. On Jan 31st beer connoisseurs, drunks and wanderers will descend upon the Horticulture Building at the NYS Fair to sample...

FILM: Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures
Kubrick made 13 films during his career.  He started making black and white films and utilize his mindful eye to capture light on film much like a photographer. Sure I’d seen films of his like Clockwork Orange (1971) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999), and even The Shining (1980).  I don’t think I paid much attention to them.  It’s only after understanding where an artist or in this...

FILM: Atlantic Records: The House Ahmet Built
Ray Charles, Big Joe Turner, The Clovers. They all have Ahmet Ertegun for discovering them and bringing them into the mainstream. Yesterday, Netflix brought me, “Atlantic Records: The House that Ahmet Built.” It is part of the PBS series, AMERICAN MASTERS.  In the two hours watching this film I came to learn that in 1947 with a $10,000 loan this Turkish immigrant landed in America...

Look what Matt Adams did with ImprovEverywhere
No Pants Subway Ride 2009  Matt Adams and I grew up in Camillus, NY, a suburb 15 minutes West of Syracuse. Matt is a couple years older than me and continually motivates me to be creative in whatever I get involved in. When I was a college radio DJ (WMAR)  a mutual friend of ours gave me a demo CD of music that Matt Adams had made.    Since then Matt had switched his focus to writing for...

It's go time!
I had a chance to hear Obama’s speech during my lunch break.  It’s nice having a President who can hold his own when speaking to the public.  Beyond that I’m ready to see if the Obama fever really kick starts the public into being more involved in government and in their own backyards.  Get to know your neighbor.  Invite them over for dinner.  Ya never know, you could be living...

FILM: Oasis' "Dig Out...In The Streets"
Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul In The Streets I’ll tell ya what, I’m a fan of Oasis.  When I was in England for my junior year of university I lived with 10 kids.  Some British, some American, some French, some Chinese, and some full of it. There was one kid, Ian, who loved two things; Oasis and the Norwich City Football Club.  God bless him. I also remember one thing that he...

FILM: Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S....
Today I was reunited with an old friend, Mrs. Netflix. If you don’t subscribe to her, or feel that your film IQ is slightly lower than you’d like it (or maybe you just prefer to let American Idol arrest your eyes and mind), might I suggest that you take another look at the goodness that Netflix offers. Sure you probably know the drill.  Find a film you want to watch, wait for it in...

WINE: Limo wine tour on Cayuga Lake
The Jess’s bday was last week and to ring it in 23 with some style eight of us took to a limo for a wine tour around Cayuga Lake, it’s part of the Fingerlakes here in Upstate NY. We hit four wineries, and four was enough for one day of “sampling.”  I learned that up here the white wines are where it’s at. Here are the wineries we visited and the bottles I picked...

FOOD: Broiled grapefruit for breakfast
photo (via) Chances are you, like me, went out last night to celebrate another week on the grind.  As if that wasn’ reason enough to raise a glass, my sisters’ boyfriend graduated the police academy on Friday so the Goot fam went out for a few rounds of drinks, and a few rounds of billiards.  Camillus, the suburb that I grew up in, has a cool little area down the hill called The...

SYR: Taking to the ice downtown
What’s better than not falling on your butt while ice skating? Buying hot chocolate for a $1 from the ice rink, walking down to Empire Brewing Co., and spiking that goodness with a couple shots of Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur. Haven’t been yet?  Spend the $6 (3 to rent skates, 3 to skate in circles). Need more info? Click here.

Bathroom remodel almost complete
You might remember from earlier (see post) that my parents where remodeling one of the bathrooms upstairs.  Dad and I got the old sink and toilet out and brought the new ones up.  I’ll tell ya what, Dad knows what he’s doing.  I learned how to connect the plumbing, and learned how not to use the toilet before it’s reattached.

MUSIC: Jamie Cullum, pop-jazz piano from the UK
I can’t remember if I learned of Jamie Cullum during or after my year in England.  In either case I’m glad my sister, The Jess, dug it and includes it in a playlist she has for us.  This tune is one of my favorites.  I wish I could see him live.  Chances are I will at some point.   I used to have a DVD of him playing at a festival in England but I gave it to a girl I was...

SYR: Downhill skiing
Over the last week I’ve put my new Winter jacket, pants and gloves to good use.  Ya see, my original plans for the Winter was to sublet an apartment near Vail, Colorado so that I could get good use of my Epic Pass that I paid for.   The Epic Pass gives me unlimited days to ride Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Heavenly.  BUT, after finishing my duties as Brand Ambassador...

ART: Jasper Johns' "Flag"
Recently my cousin, Emma, bought her first piece of art for her apartment in Washington, DC.  Side note…She works for the District of Columbia’s in the Department of the Environment; Policy and Sustainability.   The piece she bought caught my eye primarily because of the highly textured surface of the painting.  In the same vein of highly textural paintings I recently came across...

I have heroes. And someday I’d like to be a super hero.  But until then I wanted to share my admiration for two gentlemen that are heroes of mine; Keith Richards and Jim Marshall. Keith plays guitar in a band from England.  For the kids that aren’t hip to him here’s how to connect the dots….Johnny Deep channeled him for a movie he was in…I heard it had something to...
